Reading Books Fast - What's Possible?

Have books you want to read but can't get around to them ? Or it simply takes too long. Well first let me tell you that the average book never gets read completely at all. In fact, it's a publisher's secret that 90% of all books never get read past the first chapter.

The biggest problem people have when they read is that they are thinking of 5 or 10 other things while they read...so in effect their head is pointed at the book, but their mind is somewhere else.

So for the purpose of reading faster, it seems like it's almost impossible to go faster and understand more at the same time...and yet ...with the right techniques, it becomes very real and possible ...once you understand how the brain learns.

Let me tell you a sad story, I was recently demonstrating Reading Genius® to a private school one day - there were about 20 kids in the class, and about 3 hours later .. right near the end, the kids were really on fire. ..they had just accomplished what they thought was impossible: reading a 80-100 page book at their level in 10- 20 minutes. Normally it would have taken them 2-3 weeks.

The paradigm shift took place when they realized that they remembered much more as demonstrated by taking exams right after. They also understood the book better than after 2 or 3 weeks, because they didn't' have much time to forget it all. In fact, one student said it best when he said - "you know, if you go too slow reading gets really boring ".

Exactly..the brain can only learn fast - it cannot learn slow.... With respect to reading, that is the paradigm shift.

What's the secret ? Well let me digress for a moment..

Bjorn Borg , the great Tennis player, would report that when he was on, the little yellow tennis ball would look as big as a grapefruit. Easy to swat !! It wasn't actually a grapefruit of course, but that was his "inner vision".

Having the right inner vision is key.

I think Napoleon Hill said it best and simply when he said, "What the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve".

The Bible talks about it in Mark 11:24

"Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe you have received it and it will be yours" ........there's no contingency clauses there!! You see because if first you conceive it in your mind and its genuine, meaning you believe it, amazing things happen.

Giving the students the picture of what it is they need to learn first and having them develop that in their mind, can have a tremendous effect.

In the Reading Genius course, students before they read, visualize, paragraphs at one time, and imagine interpreting an entire paragraph, which often means getting a picture/image/feeling or sense of what the paragraph is stating.

So, not only could the students imagine this happening, but they even imagined the ink on the page changing colors, they imagined seeing whole pages at a time and getting the picture of what the whole page was saying. They didn't just do this sitting down, they did it standing up, while doing jumping jacks to booming music, getting their excitement level up, creating a picture of what the text is saying - which is what our brain is trying to do naturally anyway... They created the "inner vision" needed for them to perform well.

When you understand that you create the right picture in the brain first, learning becomes easy and difficulties are often avoided completely.

Dr. Maxwell Maltz in his book , Psychocybernetics discusses this in detail along with research he did to back it up scientifically. What he discovered..was that the brain follows whatever dominant "inner picture" it has and uses it as a "guide".
