Another unique method Reading Genius uses is designed to get the brain to turn on and realize more of its power. Just as walking barefoot on hot gravel toughens our feet, or lifting weights strengthens muscles.
I call this Mental Compression. A method safely and systematically overwhelms our functions to a point that naturally increases our ability in that area. Just as when people go blind in one eye, so the other eye becomes more acute. Similarly as a blind persons abilities become that much more heightened. The same principle applies in the Reading Genius Mental Compression Method.
After preparing the student in a way that is not concerned with outcome or failure, Ed has the students read upside down with one eye, progressively turning the pages faster and faster to a gentle musical rhythm. Then the students attempt to recall sections by writing with both hands on two sheets of paper. Definitely overwhelming, but lots of fun when it is set up within a no fail possibility.
As the students progress, they do 2 books at one time, and then 4 in one sitting. Once they get beyond the literal meaning of having to "understand everything," the exercise becomes fun.
The drama occurs when they turn the books right side up. Strachar reports that students who begin reading 4 books upside down, recalling information with 2 hands, can then progress on to two books right side up recalling information with one hand. The students feel that it is not as difficult as one might think. It's like simultaneously watching two TVs in a department store. Once a student approaches one book, right side up with both eyes open, the ease of scanning a page in a few seconds and understanding the ideas adeptly is done without great difficulty. Especially when the imagination exercise precedes it.
Thus Ed explains the 40-plus pages-a-minute accomplished at the US Air Force Academy (here's the reference letter) was no gimmick. Students around the world have done the same with a very strong command of what they've read, and with a high level of enjoyment.
